Patrick Mahomes is a Very Rich ManJuly 16, 2020
In the 2 years since he became starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm. In year 1, he won MVP and became one of the most electrifying player in the league as well as the sports world. In Year 2, he led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl in the past 50 years.
Now, Patrick Mahones will head into his third year with a historic 10 year contract that will make him the richest player in all of professional football. Mahomes’s lengthy 10 year contract is twice the contract length of quarterbacks such as Matt Ryan and Jimmy Garoppolo. There is no doubt that he in elite territory.
It has been over 10 years since an NFL team has given a quarterback a contract as long as 10 years. This situation last occurred in 2004 when the Atlanta Falcons awarded Michael Vick with a 10 year contract. However, there have been other examples.
However, the Philadelphia Eagles awarded a twelve-year contract to Donovan Mcnabb in the midst of his prime in 2002. Additionally, the New England Patriots gave Drew Bledsoe a ten year contract in 2001. Ironically, this was the same year that Bledsoe would suffer a serious injury and be replaced by a man by the name of Tom Brady.
Mahomes is the highest paid player on an annual basis. Additionally, he will be the highest paid player in the history of the league. Specifically, Patrick Mahomes’s lengthy contract is more than 400 million dollars. This means he will receive an annual payout of more than 40 million dollars. By comparison, the second highest annual paid player is Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson gets an annual payout of 35 million dollars.
Mahome’s overall contract total ensures that he is paid twice as much as any other active player in the NFL. The second highest paid player in the league is Matt Ryan with a 150 million dollar contract.
This contract ensures that Kansas City Chief fans will have the pleasure of seeing Mahomes as the franchise quarterback till his mid-30s. If his performance to date is any indication of the future, then Chiefs fans can look forward to many more wins and many happy Sunday afternoons. Patrick Mahomes has thrown four times as many touchdowns as he has interceptions.
However, the Chiefs are hoping that their massive purchase of Patrick Mahomes doesn’t constrict their ability to satisfy their top defensive player, Chris Jones. The Chiefs have placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Chris Jones. However, he has refused to sign the deal and may exercise the option of holding out.
If Chris Jones signs the 1-year franchise tag before July 15th, he will be paid $16.1 million dollars next season. If he doesn’t, Chris Jones will be an unrestricted free agent. Therefore, he will be allowed to test the free agent market.
There is no doubt that Mahomes’ massive contract may hinder the team’s ability to give long-term deals to anyone else on the squad. Thus, it is possible that the Chiefs may have increased their chance of losing Chris Jones as a result of this deal.
However, the Chiefs will have the services of a player that is truly something special. As a result, the Chiefs GM have full faith that this team will be a contender for years to come.
