Jorge Masvidal is one of the most popular fighters in the UFC. He has been around for a very long time. However, he officially became a superstar last year when he won three fights in spectacular fashion. The biggest highlight of those three wins was his flying knee knockout of Ben Askren in only five seconds. This was the victory that catapulted Jorge into the ranks of the most popular fighters on the planet. Jorge recently accepted a fight against UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. He took the fight only five days before it was scheduled to take place before the previous challenger, Gilbert Burns, had to pull out as a result of being infected with COVID-19.

Jorge Masvidal has been involved in a very public war of words with UFC president Dana White regarding the amount of money that he is being paid. He feels that he is a huge star and should be getting a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue that his fights bring in. He had threatened to sit out for a long period of time until his contract was renegotiated. However, Gilbert Burns pulling out of the fight against Usman during UFC 251 gave Jorge Masvidal a lot of negotiating leverage. The UFC was forced to break down and give him the money he was demanding in order to save the main event for UFC 251.

Jorge Masvidal being involved in the main event of UFC 25q is very big news. It can be argued that no fighter in the UFC other  than Conor McGregor has a bigger following than Masvidal. There are people in the media who have speculated that Masvidal taking the place of Gilbert Burns in the main event will increase pay-per-view sales by as much as 400,000. The actual number will never be known. However, there is no question that more people will pay to see UFC 251 than would have before Masvidal was added to the card.

The oddsmakers in Las Vegas have made Kamaru Usman a 3-1 favorite over Jorge Masvidal. This is not very hard to understand. Usman has only lost one time in his career. He has been very dominant in all the fights he has won. Masvidal has been beaten 13 times in his career. Prior to last year, Masvidal was not considered close to getting a title fight. That having been said, Mawsvidal has done some great work recently. Only time will tell if he can make the most out of the huge opportunity that he has been given.

The entire sports world will be focused on UFC 251. It will be the first event to be held on the UFC’s Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The UFC has decided to stage several events during the month of July in the UAE because fighters from other parts of the world are still not going to be allowed to enter the United States due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. There will be at least three events held on Fight Island. There will be three title fights at UFC 252. Along with the welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal, there will also be title fights in the featherweight and bantamweight divisions. This event is one of the most highly anticipated in the history of the UFC that dates all the way back to 1993.

Jorge Masvidal has a lot of pressure on him. He has been fighting for 15 years. He has worked his entire career to get a chance to win a UFC title. Now it has finally happened. However, he had to lose 20 pounds in only five days because he did not know he would be fighting until Sunday. Will his rapid weight loss have a negative impact on his ability to fight. Only time will tell. Masvidal has remained confident in many interviews prior to the fight. He successfully made the weight of 170 pounds.
