UK Covid-19 variant could become dominant in the USFebruary 23, 2021
As people from all continents continue to solidify their efforts to fight the Covid-19 outbreak, the virus has been observed to develop different strains that are more lethal and deadly. In fact, the current development in the change of the Covid-19 strain is that there has been a pre-dominant Covid-19 strain that has emerged in the UK and is predicted to affect the US in higher levels. This is primarily because the B.1.1.7 strain of the virus has been found to be more infectious and with dire consequences. More so, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top US infectious disease official argues that if proper measures are not taken to prevent the spread of the disease, B.1.1.7 strain of Covid-19 might become the predominant strain in the US. This comes at a time when the virus has claimed more than 400,000 American lives.
Dr. Fauci urges Americans to follow the milestones taken by the UK towards getting vaccinated. He has seen to it that multiple vaccination centers have been set up all around the country to make sure that all US citizens will be able to get the vaccine. Nonetheless, the development of variant strains of Covid-19 has made it difficult for the vaccines to work as effectively as projected. This is because the variants of the virus tend to overcome the relative protective body immunity established by the introduction of the virus. Therefore, this is alarming as even Dr. Fauci, President Biden’s Chief Medical Adviser, says that the B.1.1.7 strain is more lethal in spreading as compared to any other strain that has emerged since the outbreak of the corona virus disease in 2019.
Various manufacturers have even taken the initiative to develop better vaccines by introducing boosters in the vaccines. Fortunately, the process of altering vaccines has become much easier and faster, thanks to the new mRNA vaccines used by companies such as Moderna and BioNTech. Changing the vaccines has become relatively easier as it does not apply the rudimentary vaccine introduction that were mostly created by vast quantities of the dead or weakened virus. In this case, only the molecule is tweaked appropriately to simulate the emerging strain of the virus and is then re-introduced back to the vaccine.
The US has already reported 611 cases of the B.1.1.7 strain of the corona virus across 33 states. The most affected states have also been identified to be California and Florida. As such, Dr. Fauci has advised that even before everyone in the US is successfully vaccinated against this strain, they should continue to observe and reinforce public health measures such as hand washing and effective social distancing. These measures might prove to be quite helpful in reducing the capability and possibility of the strain from becoming dominant. In addition, US citizens have been urged not to hold Super bowl parties as they may increase the ability of the more infectious strain to be rampant. This is given by statistics that have identified the rise of Covid-19 cases during big events such as Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving.
