Campus Apartments LLC Expands Into National Student Housing Firm
Campus Apartments LLC got its start in 1958. Its founder, Alan Horwitz, was out and about at the University of Pennsylvania when he noticed there was a long line of students trying to sign up for housing. This inspired him to start a business to address this need. He saw that most landlords in the area weren’t making effective use of their property. He decided to offer housing that featured a high standard of quality that students and their parents would appreciate. Over the next few decades, he changed the neighborhood around this university.
In the 1990s, Campus Apartments began to expand well beyond the University of Pennsylvania. They opened apartments for students near colleges and universities across the nation. These were built through partnerships with other private organizations and public private partnerships. It is now one of the largest companies in the student housing industry. Their mantra is, “Smart. Living.”
Alan Horwitz is still a leader at Campus Apartments. He is the chairman of the board. The executive team is led by Chief Executive Officer David J. Adelman. Daniel I. Bernstein is president and chief investment officer, while Miles H. Orth is chief operating officer and executive vice president. James A. Smith III completes the executive team as the chief financial officer and executive vice president.
Campus Apartments manages over $1.5 billion in real estate. It has student housing in 18 states and has partnered with over 50 colleges and universities. It employs over 500 people. Their apartments include mixed-use, garden-style, urban scattered-site, mid-rise, and high-rise housing.
Its communities stretch from New York to California. Campus Housing offers studios, 2, 3, 4, and 5 bedroom housing units. Campus Crossings at Abbey West in Athens, Georgia, is an example of their housing. This complex offers 2- and 4-bedroom apartments starting from $405 a month. It offers several amenities such as an outdoor pool, tennis court, a batting cage, a complimentary coffee bar, and a gated community. The amenities are designed to support student’s healthy living and encourage students to socialize with others and achieve academic success.
Campus Housing has received praise from university executives and administrators. One testimonial came from Michael Mandl, a former executive vice president for finance and administration at Emory University. He wrote that he found the team at Campus Housing to be creative and flexible when coming up with student housing solutions. He saw the apartment complex they built near Emory to be particularly popular with professional and graduate students.
The Director of Development Management at the University of Pennsylvania, Paul Sehnert, wrote that the Campus Housing complex near his university became a trophy project that the university is very proud of. It’s in a great place that gives students a great base from which to live, attend school, work, and play.
