One of Canada’s most successful craft brewers is named Eli Gershkovitch. He worked as an attorney before deciding to open a brewpub. The lawyer began to take an interest in craft beer when he visited Europe in 1987. He toured multiple breweries and appreciated the beverages’ distinctive flavors. Gershkovitch also liked the idea of manufacturing a product and directly selling it to customers.


Eight years later, he opened the Steamworks Brew Pub. This establishment differs from all other Canadian breweries because it uses a steam-powered system to produce beer. Eli Gershkovitch was happy to have tried this experiment after tasting the initial batch. It had a unique yet delicious flavor.


When Steamworks succeeded in attracting numerous customers, its CEO decided to expand the pub. It originally had enough seats for 184 people. Eli Gershkovitch more than quadrupled its capacity by adding 570 seats. He went on to acquire a nearby eatery and rename it the Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar.


The former attorney began sponsoring events in the Gastown area. This helped boost local awareness of his businesses. Seven years later, Steamworks established a large brewing facility that produces 20 times more beer than its pub.

Steamworks beers have also become available in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Hong Kong. Despite greater transportation and advertising costs, the bigger brewery has yielded considerably higher revenues.


Eli Gershkovitch celebrated the introduction of bottled beers by holding a party at the Gastown pub. This event featured huge balloons, live music, and tasty refreshments. The staff prepared foods ranging from cheese fritters to barbecue pork buns. Attendees sampled a selection of beers and ate as many snacks as they wanted.


Although Eli Gershkovitch originally had a business partner, he gained full control of the firm only two years after opening his pub. The CEO prefers to lead his company independently. He doesn’t want to have board members or stock investors because these stakeholders often demand constant growth while ignoring other important goals.


Conrad Gmoser worked at Eli Gershkovitch’s business for 17 years before opening his own brewery. His company continues to cooperate with Steamworks. He says that Gershkovitch helped him learn how to set up and run a profitable firm. Gmoser appreciates the ability to gain immediate feedback when customers try new beers.

Eli Gershkovitch understands the importance of expanding to satisfy the demand for a product. He believes that customer demand will fall if a company can’t supply enough merchandise. His business has changed in a number of ways, but Eli Gershkovitch continues to follow the plan that he developed in 1995. The craft brewer seeks to grow his company at a steady pace without taking unnecessary risks.


When he’s not running his business, the Steamworks CEO enjoys flying small airplanes and collecting antique cars. Eli Gershkovitch gained a pilot’s license about 24 years ago. In 2009, he traveled to Europe in a Cessna 182. His cars include a 1948 Plymouth station wagon and a Stanley Steamer.
